Pink geraniums (Pelargonium)

It's mid-summer and I did not post new photos for a looooong time although I am still shooting... Will try to improve.

Here is a pretty pink geranium flower (Pelargonium) also commonly known as storksbills. There are many, many of them here in Switzerland almost in each garden, fountain, balcony. Great flower!

Amsterdam night scene: pub and moving tram

When I was shooting this image in the center of Amsterdam with a long exposure a tram appeared in the frame. I thought it ruined the shot. But the final result turned out to be quite interesting.

Victoria Falls on Zambezi River (border between Zambia and Zimbabwe)

Victoria Falls is one of the most spectacular natural World Heritage sites (inscribed on the World Heritage List in December 1989).

Mosi-oa-Tunya is the name in local language that means “the smoke that thunders”.

This photo of the Eastern Cataract on the Zambian side was taken at the beginning of the rainy season (November 2007), but the Zambezi River is still not full. By the mid of that sunny hot day most of the streams you see here have vanished - amazing transformation. I will post more pictures here.

Can't you see many similarities with elephants? :-) The fact is that this is the closest living relative to elephant. They are very funny and pretty animals.

Rock Hyrax (Procavia capensis)

This cute creature is called Cape Hyrax, or Rock Hyrax (Procavia capensis). It looks a little bit like a guinea pig with short ears and tail. They are also known as dassies in South Africa.

This animal has a bigger relative in the fauna kingdom. Who do you think? Well... an elephant. Yes, ELEPHANT!!! Hyraxes are stated to be the closest living relatives of elephants. These small animals (most measure between about 30 and 70 cm long and weigh between 2 and 5 kg) share numerous features with elephants, such as toenails, excellent hearing, sensitive pads on their feet, small tusks-like teeth, good memory, high brain functions and others. I have to say, I really like this theory.

Hyraxes retain a number of early mammal characteristics. In particular they have poorly developed internal temperature regulation. They deal with this "inconvenience" by huddling together for warmth, and by basking in the sun like this fellow on the rocks of Hermanus in South Africa.

We saw them! Not very close unfortunately, but many of them. Hermanus at the Walker Bay in South Africa is the best land based whale watching destination in the world.

Magnificent creatures... they move quite slowly and graciously.

Love this old-fashion car. Volkswagen Fusca is very popular in Brazil. It is still running!

Pink sunset

What a gorgeous sunset was it! The sky turned rose, then red and finally pink... like a huge fire was swallowing the horizon... Wau! It lasted only 10 minutes, but every minute was worth much more… These few moments definitely made that day at Iguassu Falls (Iguazu Falls).

Adventure boat safari in Iguassu Falls, Brazil

The image in the previous post was shot from above. This photo is from almost under... under water. They take you on a boat trip right under Iguassu waterfalls. No matter how much plastic you wrap around, you get wet.... really wet... it's a lot of water falling from the sky on your head! Getting a decent picture without a waterproof case is quite a challenge. You definitely will remember this adventure trip on Iguassu (Iguazu, Iguacu) river in the Brazilian part of the Iguassu National Park (Parque Nacional do Iguacu).

I had a chance to visit Iguassu Falls last week. These amasing waterfalls are shared by Brazil and Argentina along the Iguassu River (sometimes spelled Iguazu or Iguacu Falls) and surrounded by tropical forests of Iguassu National Park. The system consists of about 270 falls along 2.7 kilometres of the river.

Field Scabious flower, Knautia arvensis

Back to flowers...This is quite common in Europe bluish-mauve flower called Field Scabious (Knautia arvensis). But tricky to photograph: very difficult to capture this beautiful colour and get the depth of field right. Do you think I managed?

First photo - macro flowers

I was thinking what should be the first photo I post here. Let's start with a flower image... It is called Common Ragwort (Senecio jacobaea). The photo was taken on a wonderful meadow next to my house few weeks ago. I used "put your lens inside the flower" technique and made several shots. I am quite pleased with this one: I like the colours and soft feeling... What do you think?
